Did you know a baby’s brain grows to about 90% of adult size before reaching kindergarten? Children pick up new skills and abilities at an exponential rate. As they grow up, they are able to think, speak, and act in more complex ways. Early childhood is the most crucial developmental period when kids develop essential skills in cognitive, motor, communication and language, and social and emotional areas. These interconnected skills help shape a child to grow into a happy and well-adjusted adult.

Babies start to acquire social and emotional skills as soon as they are born and interact with people around them. By the time they reach toddlerhood, they experience a colorful range of emotions, such as fussiness, temper tantrums, or instant mood swings. Parents may feel frustrated by these behaviors, but they are less likely to appear as children get older and learn to communicate their feelings more effectively. These changes that toddlers go through over the course of their growing years are referred to as milestones.

What is Social and Emotional Development?
Among the key areas of development, social and emotional development involves a child learning ways to manage their feelings, interact with others, and control their reactions to the environment.
Social and Emotional Milestones
Social and emotional milestones show how much a child has changed in how they manage emotions and interact with others by a certain age. Responding with smiles, trusting caregivers, and self-soothing are some examples of social and emotional milestones. Keep in mind that these milestones are not set in stone, and the age at which a child reaches them can vary. They do, however, give a general idea of the changes to expect as a child gets older.
